Early in our summer 2025 stay in the Dominican Republic, Elisa's cousin Gabriel Arturo told us that he had seen a recent Dominican TV show in which economist Andy Dauhajre spoke favorably about me. I found this hard to believe. After all, a long time had passed -- more than thirty years. But Gabriel Arturo sent me the clip, and it was true! See above. Andy describes how Dominican companies canceled contracts with his foundation because of his support for economic reform. He says that during this dark period, the U.S. Embassy "threw him a life preserver" by funding his foundation, allowing it to survive. Dauhajre kindly credits me with alerting the U.S. Ambassador to the funding plight of the foundation.
I later had a nice WhatsAp exchange with Andy. I thanked him for his comments.
This was all a reminder of happier times. The DR had (and still has) a lot of problems -- all countries do. But at least back then the United States was on the side of the good guys. Andy notes in the video how U.S. policies have changed.
